Gajapati district is a district of Odisha State in India. It was created from Ganjam District on 2 October, 1992. Gajapati district was named after Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayan Deb, the King of the Paralakhemundi estate and the first Prime Minister of Orissa, who is remembered for his contribution in the formation of a separate state, and inclusion of his estate in Odisha. The district headquarters at Paralakhemundi, formerly a Zamindari, has been clustered within a radius of approximately 5 kilometers around the geometric centre of Paralakhemundi. The District is a part of the Red Corridor.As of 2011 it is the third least populous district of Odisha (out of 30), after Debagarh and Boudh.

Field

Covering an area of 3850 sq km, Gajapati District lies between 18°.6’ to 19°.39’ North Latitude and 83°.48’ to 84°.08’ East Longitude. Climatic condition in the Gajapati District varies between 16 degree to 40 degree Celsius and the normal rainfall received is 1403.30 mm.The District is surrounded by Andhra Pardesh in its South, Ganjam District in its East, Rayagada in its West and Kandhamal in its North. The soil and climate is suitable for plantation of crops and there is a great potential of horticulture development in the District. More than 60 percent of lands are situated in hilly terrain and high lands. Those are mainly suitable for horticulture. Other cultivable land are coming under medium lands (20 percent) and low lands (15 percent) category.

Total population of the Gajapati District (2011 census) was 5,77,817 comprising total 2,82,882 male population and 2,94,935 female population. Total SC population of the District is 39,175 and total ST population of the District is 3,13,714.

Education

RMSA is a central sponsored scheme for Universalisation of Secondary Education.Universalisation of access and improvement of quality with equity at secondary stage. It is a crucial step to provide to State Govt. to take up the goal of Universalisation of Secondary Education.There are 89 UGHS in the District 63 UGHS were undertaken by the RMSA for construction of school building in different phases. The funds has already released to the EE RWD for civil work on the available land for school building.RMSA also provides funds [at] Rs.8.12 lakhs to each UGHS (63 Nos) towards furniture grant to purchase science equipments, science lab furniture, library room furniture, Art and craft room furniture, computer room furniture for additional class room at the school level.

Culture

Tribals form majority of the population of Gajapati District. The Saora Community constitutes the largest group among them and Lanjia Saora is considered most primitive in this district. The Saouras are one of the oldest known tribes of India. They are called by various terms such as Savaras, Sabaras, Saura, Sora etc. But here the term Saora is used uniformly as it is closely approximatestheir language. They are widely distributed from Bundelkhand in the west to Odisha in the east. But they are found in great compactness on the edges of the Eastern ghats in Ganjam, Gajapati and Koraput District of Odisha and Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh.

Flowing River

Mahendratanaya, a tributary of Bansadhara river, originates near Tuparasingi village in Gajapati district, and plays hide and seek with the two border states. However, four-fifths of the river flows through Gajapati and Rayagada district.Mahendragiri peak of Eastern Ghats is associated with many mythological legends as per Hindu Puranas and stories. It was said since a long as once Lord Parshuram used to stay and meditate Lord Shiva for a long time on this mountain, after which he received the Parsu (double axle) from the God.
